Oakenfold at 1015
July 4, 2007 on 3:53 am | In out & about | 1 Comment
Given that July 4th falls dead it the middle of the week this year, it has afforded us a rare occurrence- a week with two Fridays! Ryan was bright enough to recognize this and suggested we check out Paul Oakenfold at 1015 Folsom tonight. Wow great show! This was my first time back since the shooting in February. We were there that night and it happened about 10 feet from Ryan- scary. But I am glad to say there were no such events tonight and all went well. We got it the pre-sale admission line around 11pm and were in the door around 11:45pm (long line). Luckily, Ryan did not break out in a rash due to his line allergy, but it was a near thing.
Oakenfold spun from about 12:30am to 3:00am, at which point I was spent (it was a long day) and we headed back down the peninsula. There were quite a few familiar faces in the crowd from work and other places, so we were not the only ones who jumped at the chance to see him- even on a Tuesday.
1310 Warehouse Art Show
November 3, 2006 on 8:54 pm | In out & about | No CommentsLast night I headed up to the city with what turned out to be a pretty large group of folks to attend a gallery showing at Warehouse 1310. Ryan sent the note out and gave the relevant details, though he did fail to mention that there was an evite for the event with over 400 people on it ….
We started off the evening with the traditional Mexican dinner, though this time it was in the Mission. For those with a pension for taquerias, I suggest you try Taqueria San Francisco. I had the mojado with al pastor … damn tasty.
Ryan’s sister was showing some her work, and from what I gathered it was a successful showing. I have to admit that I am rather upset that the original of one of my favorites has already been sold, but there are always prints I suppose. The show ended up being lots of people packed in a small space, so by about 10:30 it was time to leave.
A few of us attempted to see Borat, which was of course sold out, and in the absence of anything else the group wanted to see, we just kinda hung around the AMC for twenty minutes talking and figuring out if we wanted to do anything else that night. The answer turned out to be no.
Since Ryan, Ken and I had taken the train up to the city from Mtn. View, and the last train did not leave until midnight, I decided to hop it back to the South Bay. All in all a fun night out in SF. No crazy parties or insane barroom antics, just a good night out with friends.
Climbers go Karting
October 24, 2006 on 10:40 pm | In out & about | No CommentsDamn that was fun. Saturday evening, AJ, Linda and I met up with Bob and some of the rest of the gang from Planet Granite to battle it out on the track. Travis had a small advantage, considering that he is a racing instructor when not doing the technology thing. The facilities at LeMans Karting in Fremont were pretty nice. Good track, suits and carts. The timing system was also top notch, tracking individual lap times and giving nice printout summaries of the races. Oh, and it is hard work, but everyone else was a sweat ball as well following the race, so I don’t feel so bad.
The Bridge
October 4, 2006 on 8:49 am | In out & about | No CommentsLast night, Gabe, Tom and myself headed to Stanford to view a student screening of The Bridge, an independent documentary about suicide and the Golden Gate Bridge. Very well done, very powerful, and not for the faint. Eric Steel did a fantastic job of capturing the reality and the back story of the people he chose to highlight. It makes for an insightful look at not only the romance of the bridge, but also a tearing story of mental illness and human drama.

This is a shot from the mezzanine at Chubberly Auditorium, where the screening was held.
